Every restaurant sends orders to the kitchen somehow. The question is whether they arrive on paper or on a screen. Both work. The right one depends on how busy your kitchen gets and how many people cook in it.
The KOT printer
A thermal printer in the kitchen prints a KOT for every order. It is the most common setup in India for good reasons:
- It is cheap: a 58 mm or 80 mm thermal printer is all you need.
- Cooks already know how to read a slip.
- Paper does not need charging or a Wi-Fi signal in the kitchen.
The weak points show up in the rush. Slips get lost or splashed, nobody knows which order has waited 25 minutes, and the counter has to walk in to ask "is Table 6 ready?".
The Kitchen Display System (KDS)
A KDS puts the same tickets on a screen: a TV on the kitchen wall or a tablet on the pass. Each order is a card that moves from Queue to Preparing to Ready as the kitchen taps it.
- Waiting time on every card. Cards turn late when they pass the prep time you set, so the oldest order is never buried.
- Rush orders can be marked so they jump the queue.
- Stations. The tandoor screen shows only tandoor items; an expo view shows the whole order coming together.
- The counter sees "Ready" without walking into the kitchen.
- A kitchen report shows how long orders actually take, by day.
Which one should you pick?
- Small café or one cook: a KOT printer is enough.
- Busy lunch and dinner, several cooks, or separate counters: a KDS pays for itself in fewer lost orders and faster table turns.
- Cloud kitchen or QSR with takeaway tokens: a KDS plus a "Now serving" token board on a TV for customers.
You do not have to choose for ever
In ZingBills, paper KOT and the Kitchen Display are switches in Shop Settings, not different products. Start with a printer, turn the KDS on when the kitchen is ready for it, and keep the printer as a backup. The KDS runs on any TV with a browser or any Android tablet, so the screen you already have is often enough to try it.
See it on your own menu
