Token system for takeaway orders: how QSRs and cloud kitchens stop shouting names
Every busy takeaway counter has the same scene: a crowd at the pickup window, a cook calling out "paneer roll!", and three people stepping forward. A token system fixes it with one short number.
How a token system works
- The customer orders and pays at the counter, and the bill prints Token 12 in large letters.
- The kitchen gets the same order as a KOT or a kitchen-screen card marked Token 12.
- When the food is ready, Token 12 moves to Ready on a TV board the customers can see.
- The customer with Token 12 collects it. Nobody has to shout.
Why one number matters
The token must be the same everywhere: on the bill, on the kitchen ticket and on the board. If the kitchen works from a bill number and the customer holds a different slip, you are back to calling names. Keep it short, too: "Token 12" is easy to read across a counter; a 14-character invoice number is not.
Token number vs bill number
Your GST bill numbers must run in order without gaps. Token numbers do not: they start again every day and an order that is cancelled after taking a token does no harm. That is why good software keeps the two separate.
The "Now serving" board
A TV at the pickup counter shows two lists: Preparing and Ready. The newest ready token shows big, with a chime. Customers stop crowding the window because they can see where their order is.
Setting it up in ZingBills
For a restaurant, café, QSR or cloud kitchen with KOT or the Kitchen Display turned on, ZingBills gives every takeaway order a token automatically, the moment the first item goes into the cart. The same token prints on the bill and the kitchen slip and shows on the kitchen screen. Add a ZingDisplay TV with a token board and the "Now serving" screen updates by itself as the kitchen marks orders ready. Read more on the QSR page and the cloud kitchen page.
See it on your own menu
ZingBills is a restaurant POS for restaurants, cafés, bars, QSRs and cloud kitchens, on an Android phone or in any browser. Book a free demo and we will set it up on your own menu, or see the plans.
